The exotic spice island of Zanzibar is a jewel in the Indian Ocean, perfect for adding as a beach extension to your safari holiday or as destinations in its own right. You’ll find pristine beaches with reef-protected warm waters and opportunities to explore the cultural heart of the island.
The historic capital is Stone Town that offers a diversity of cultural influences, with labyrinthine alleyways, Sultan’s palaces, weathered historic buildings, intricate architectural details and bustling curio stalls – a real assault on the senses. Retrace explorer David Livingstone’s footsteps to Livingstone House, wander around the old forts and vibrant markets, and visit the site of the former slave market. Then head to one of the rooftop restaurants for a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. Stone Town makes for a great day or two of exploration, but the ‘stay longer’ reason here is Zanzibar’s stunning palm-fringed beaches, lapped by warm Indian Ocean waters. Thanks to the barrier reef, Zanzibar’s east coast beaches have the calmest water, which is the location for our preferred lodges.
July to September is a very popular time to travel. However, most times of year are worthwhile, with balmy temperatures and sunshine the norm. During the short rains in November and December, downpours are followed by blue skies, with only the peak of the 'long rains' in April and May being very wet.
Flights to Zanzibar Archipelago are available from Johannesburg and Nairobi ideal for adding to any of our safari itineraries.
